Autonomous workers cooperatives are workers associations with the aim of assure work and income in a democratic context. In this sense, they constitute alternative spaces in the social economic and politic capitalist order. The objective of this paper is to describe how the workers in one cooperative of Fortaleza, Ceará view the cooperative and their work, through the analyses of their discourses. The focus is on the impact in the subjective perceptions of the work structure and organization in the process of change from being traditional workers to associated workers in a cooperative. The participants were 38 professionals from a cooperative of 768 workers. Focal groups, individual interviews and open questionnaires were used to collect the information. The results have shown that in spite of the occurrence of some changes in their attitudes in relation to their former work in a traditional company, there are persistent habits and expectations linked to the former condition, besides a feeling of dissatisfaction towards the cooperative. In their discourses there is no sign of appropriation of the actual condition of autonomy. Their subjective process reproduces the same old pattern and the cooperative organizational culture is hybrid, showing a mixture of a traditional firm and the possibilities of an autonomous cooperative. This is probably due to the place the cooperatives have in the socio-economic scene; a place that does not reflects a real progress in the worker's condition, but its deterioration.
