Abstract

EUZEBIOS FILHO, ANTONIO  and  SIQUEIRA, GABRIEL. The “hate office” in focus: bolsonaro government from a psychosocial perspective. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.58, pp.660-675.  Epub July 08, 2024. ISSN 2175-1390.

The “hate office” became known for the dissemination of fake news, produced by advisors and supporters of Jair Bolsonaro’s government, elected president of the Republic of Brazil in 2018. We sought to demonstrate, from a psychosocial perspective, discursive modalities used by the “hate office” to build the image of enemies chosen by the government, namely: those considered “communists”, defenders of Human Rights, among others. We argue that attacks on political opponents of the Bolsonaro government have a double objective: to enhance the president’s image and to disqualify his opponents’ image. The narrative review of publications from the president’s supporters networks and mass media outlets indicates that the disqualification of opponents, based on false narratives, has been based on the propagation of fear and hatred against opponents, resulting in violent actions against them. Finally, we highlight psychosocial tasks that can help in overcoming polarization and decoding power relations related to the phenomenon in question.
