Neurodiversity is the idea that autism is a neurological difference that is part of every autistic person’s identity. The term is also used to designate the social movement, led by autistic people, that defends this concept. Its activists define autism as a condition (Autism Spectrum Condition) rather than a disorder (Autism Spectrum Disorder), the medical term used to describe it. This article studies the movement based on Salvador Sandoval’s Analytical Model of Political Consciousness, which examines the psychopolitical aspects of social movements based on 7 dimensions: Collective Identity; Beliefs, Values and Expectations About Society; Collective Interests; Political Effectiveness; Feelings Regarding Opponents; Goals and Repertoire of Actions and Will to Act Collectively, in addition to political memory as a transversal dimension to the model. The Brazilian Association Action for the Rights of Autistic People (ABRAÇA) activities, led by autistic people and which adheres to the idea ofneurodiversity, is focused here.
