In 2001, Sandoval Salvador published the Political Consciousness Model (PCM), presenting an operational tool to explore the popular idea of political consciousness. This article investigates how the PCM has been appropriated by psychopolitical research on participation and political consciousness based on the analysis of a corpus of 28 articles published between 2001 and 2021. The results highlight the suitability of the PCM in the analysis of political participation in different contexts, its viability in theoretical and empirical studies, and the possibility of adapting its dimensions to different theoretical frameworks. There is a preferential focus of studies on political actors on the left of the ideological spectrum and a prescriptive inclination in some analyses. We conclude by emphasizing the need to move beyond normative analyses to understand political consciousness in individuals and groups aligned with the far-right.
