Resumen

NUNES, ANA CLARA DE ARRUDA  y  SOUZA, TATIANA MACHIAVELLI CARMO. Violence against women and religion: experiences of evangelical (neo)pentecostal. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2025, vol.25, e25012.  Epub 05-Sep-2025. ISSN 2175-1390.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-1390.v25e25012.

Violence against women is present in religious groups and results from the unequal socio-historical construction between genders. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of (neo)pentecostal evangelical women who have suffered violence in their marital relationships. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with six women who had experienced domestic violence, who identified themselves as evangelicals and who attended (Neo)Pentecostal churches. Based on the historical-dialectical materialist perspective, it was identified that the (neo)pentecostal religion is one of the factors that assert the hierarchy of male and female roles and the submission of women. Furthermore, it contributes to the maintainance of violent relationships and can be a barrier to reporting. Paradoxically, religion can also be a help, a way of dealing with the psychological and physical suffering arising from the experiences of domestic violence.
