FERREIRA, SÉRGIO RODRIGO DA SILVA. Subjectivity and algorithmic surveillance: notes on the technological agency of social media platforms. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2025, vol.25, e23986.  Epub 02-Maio-2025. ISSN 2175-1390.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-1390.v25e23986.

With the “platformization” of the internet, our daily flows of interaction and lived actions are transformed into digital flows that can be captured and used economically through practices of surveillance and behavioral modulation. The growth of this model is intertwined with the processes of subjectivation in such a way that it becomes a challenge to research on the technological agency of social media platforms. In this article, we seek to present the implications of algorithmic visibility and platform systems that list valid knowledge and identify its most relevant components for examining entangled subjective processes. We argue that the creation of a notion of “abnormative objectivity” of algorithms generates the feeling that they mirror a normativity inherent to society only by (re)producing and multiplying it. These algorithms produce online spaces of coexistence that are immune to difference, using structures of knowledge validation in which other relevant voices are actively excluded and discredited.
