SARMENTO, VINÍCIUS y EVANGELISTA, PAULO. Homophobia in phenomenological-existential psychological literature: an integrative review. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2025, vol.25, e24278. Epub 18-Jul-2025. ISSN 2175-1390. https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-1390.v25e24278.
Given the historical context of change in the way homosexuality is viewed in the sciences, this article consists of an integrative review of the phenomenological-existential psychological literature on homophobia. Articles published in Portuguese and English were searched in the Portal CAPES, SciELO, LILACS, PePSIC and APA PsycInfo databases. Initially, 178 publications were obtained. Due to exclusion criteria, 15 articles remained, all using qualitative method and 14 in English. As a result, it was observed that the selected articles addresses: (a) psychotherapy with LGB clients, highlighting the role of psychotherapy in the elaboration of suffering; (b) phenomenological-existential explorations of LGB individuals experiences and the suffering of these individuals; and (c) theories or criticisms on the origin of sexual orientation from a phenomenological-existential perspective, which conceptually deal little with homophobia, especially without a critical appreciation of its impact on the formation of sexual orientations.
