This research aimed to investigate the affective mechanisms of adherence to the far right in contemporary Brazil. To this end, we combine Social Psychology and Political Philosophy with a systematic literature review and in-depth interviews with Bolsonaro voters, analyzed through thematic core meanings. The results indicated that fear (of violence, loss of status, and privileges), anchored in superstition (belief in transcendental solutions/saviors), is the structuring affect of adherence to political extremism. In light of Spinoza, we identified a dual movement: fear mobilizes, while superstition stabilizes subjectively, configuring an “affective servitude” that converts sad passions into support for authoritarian projects. We found that this dynamic transforms diffuse unease into organized political support. We conclude that psychosocial strategies that confront these narratives and strengthen democratic bonds are urgently needed.
