Abstract

BAUTH, Murilo Freitas; ANGELICO, Antonio Paulo  and  OLIVEIRA, Daniela Carine Ramires de. Associations between self-statements and social skills in public speaking by university students. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.2, pp.154-162.  Epub Aug 23, 2024. ISSN 1677-0471.  https://doi.org/10.15689/ap.2023.2202.21080.05.

A good repertoire of social skills in public speaking can be considered indispensable for both the academic and social performance of university students. This study aimed to investigate the sociodemographic, occupational, and cognitive factors that predict the public speaking social skills of university students. For this research, 818 university students, aged between 17 and 57 years, responded to the Social Skills Inventory, the Self-Statements During Public Speaking Scale, and a Sociodemographic and Occupational Questionnaire, collectively, in the classroom. It was found that the total score of the Self-Statements During Public Speaking Scale and the “sex” and “work or has income” variables were predictors of public speaking social abilities. Further research with larger samples is suggested, as well as longitudinal studies to verify whether changes occur in the levels of self-assessment and the public speaking social skills of students throughout their undergraduate courses.

Keywords : social skills; self-assessment; speech; college students.
