The WHOQOL-bref is the reduced version of the quality-of-life assessment instrument developed by the World Health Organization. It was developed through collaboration among research centers of different countries, seeking to cover various attributes of the quality-of-life construct from a cross-cultural perspective. This study aimed to present the psychometric properties of the WHOQOL-bref for the context of Brazilian public security, and to seek evidence of convergent validity with the SF-36. Participants were 10,914 public security agents from different Brazilian states, with a predominance of males (81.8%) and a mean age of 41 years (SD = 0.08). The results indicated the validity and reliability of the WHOQOL-bref for the public security context, with support for a four-factor solution, which presented similarities and differences regarding the distribution of items found in the original study. Evidence of convergent validity with another quality-of-life measure (SF-36) was also found.
