Expectations of the future in adolescence are important for the projection and planning of the future. This systematic review study aimed to describe the instruments used in research to measure or qualify expectations of the future in adolescent populations. Articles published from 2008 to 2019 were reviewed, in the CAPES virtual libraries, Adolec Brasil,and SciELOdatabases. The searches resulted in 31 studies for analysis. The measures were described according to psychometric or ideographic style, indicating the scales and their characteristics. The validation evidence of the instruments was also investigated. The results indicated that, among the instruments,few presented evidence of validation to access expectations for the future, thus highlighting the need for the elaboration and validation of new instruments for this purpose, especially in Brazil.
