This study aimed to develop an instrument to assess family violence against children and adolescents, which features the indirect approach of victims of violence using previous records made by professionals, with broader coverage concerning the dimensions of the phenomenon, and to contribute to the construction of a new classification system in Brazil. The instrument was designed based on the Maltreatment Classification System (MCS), the Modified Maltreatment Classification System (MMCS), the National Incidence Study (NIS-4), an instrument recently built in Spain, and the “Sistema de Informações para a Infância e Adolescência” (SIPIA — CT) of Brazil. The instrument was submitted to a pilot study and analyzed by judges.This resulted in adjustments to the items and the inclusion of more detailed instructions, which suggested face validity and evidence of content-based validity. There is a need for more validity studies, and also the construction of guidelines for evaluators, followed by training to increase the ratios of agreement between evaluators.
