The aim of this study was to examine the socioeconomic variables of the school and the socioeconomic characteristics, gender, socio-emotional skills, school belonging and indiscipline of the students, and to understand the explanatory power of these variables in proficiency in Portuguese Language and Mathematics in the 5th and 9th grades, as well as in the 3rd year of high school. The SENNA and 18REST-2 were used. A database with 14,601 respondents was made available for analysis, which was conducted using descriptive statistics, normality assessments, and structural equation modeling. Three models were tested, with the second showing the best fit indices. The main results highlighted the relationships between proficiency, socioeconomic level, curiosity to learn, school belonging, and indiscipline. This study provides valuable insights for informing public policies that foster student engagement and aim to achieve gender equity, considering the socioeconomic aspects of both school and family environments.
