CAMPOS, João Oliveira Cavalcante  e  GAUER, Gustavo. Proneness to Shame Questionnaire: Development and Validity Evidences. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2025, vol.24, e24312.  Epub 15-Set-2025. ISSN 1677-0471.  https://doi.org/10.15689/ap.2025.24.e24312.

In the Biopsychosocial Evolutionary Model, shame is defined as the experience of feeling flawed and undesirable, encompassing cognitive (external and internal shame), emotional, and behavioral aspects. This article reports the development of the Proneness to Shame Questionnaire (PSQ), a new psychometric instrument designed to measure this construct. In developing the PSQ, emotional descriptors were distributed across items related to the cognitive aspects of shame. Data were collected from 916 participants through an online survey. As expected, the final version of the PSQ was structured around three factors: external shame (ES), internal shame (IS), and submissive behaviors (SB). The scale presented excellent fit indices (CFI=.99; TLI=.99, and RMSEA=.04) and strong reliability (ES=.87, IS=.88 and CS=.79). Its dimensions showed consistent correlations with measures of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and external shame. These findings highlight the PSQ’s potential to contribute to mental health research.
