Abstract

OLIVEIRA-MENEGOTTO, Lisiane Machado de; WECKER, Amanda; SILVA, Maiquélen  and  GERHARDT, Ana Letícia. THE INFANT OBSERVATION METHOD IN CONTEXTS OF VULNERABILITY: WHERE IS THE OBSERVER’S PLACE?. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2021, vol.27, n.2, pp.475-494.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1677-1168.  https://doi.org/10.5752/p.1678-9563.2021v27n2p475-494.

This paper aims to discuss the role of the observer in the Infant Observation Method in contexts of vulnerability, considering excerpts from two observations of the mother-infant relationship which came from a larger research that accompanied infants and their mothers during their first year of life. These observations followed the procedures recommended by the Bick method and occurred at the babies’ own homes, in a periphery of a city in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre-RS. As a result, the observer stands out as the one who provides support to the maternal knowledge, through empathy and abstention regarding judgments. Observers were consistently moved by situations of vulnerability and helplessness. Therefore, supervision was highlighted in the method, as it stands for a place of reflection, in which both the observation and the observer are welcomed for the purpose of discussion concerning their role within the family they accompany.

Keywords : Infant observation method; Role of the observer; Mother-baby relationship; Psychoanalysis; Vulnerability.
