Look for the mental health of children and adolescents is still under development, and is gradually getting the care generating instances of political and academic research. However, few studies proffer a space for this population speak about himself ("children as subject"). Objective: To review the literature on mental health research with "participating children as subjects" as well as the investigative methods employed. Methods: Searches were conducted in the databases LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, SciELO using the keywords "child and mental health" whose inclusion criteria were published in Portuguese publication, type text article limit a child, from 2001 to 2011. Results: There were 152 abstracts; after using the criteria, 32 articles were identified. Final Thoughts: There are few articles that address the topic children and adolescents and, when they propose to speak about this, override methods designed by instruments sealed as scales and tests that limit a more free and spontaneous, restricting its consideration as "subject".
