Introduction:
The death of patients has repercussions on hospital psychologists.
Objective:
to analyze the role of hospital psychologists with terminal patients.
Method:
Sample, for convenience, of 10 professionals. A semi-structured questionnaire, developed by the researchers, and the Inventory of Coping Strategies by Folkman and Lazarus were used. Data were analyzed using word cloud - Epi Info for Windows, version 7.2.1.0, and statistical methods.
Results:
Most were female, with an average age of 31 years (± 4.4) and an average hospital stay of 7 years (± 3.4). The main difficulties in working with terminal patients were: staff, suffering, diagnosis, family, denial. The most used coping strategies are Problem Resolution (70.83%) and Social Support (66.11%).
Conclusion:
Hospital psychologists find challenges in working with terminally ill patients and use coping strategies aimed at stressing the terminality.
