JABRAZI, Mariana e SHIGAEFF, Nadia. EFFECTS OF ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY ON COGNITION, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2021, vol.19, n.2, pp.46-64. Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 2175-3547. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15489945.
Hospitalizations due to health conditions can result in adverse effects such as cognitive decline, anxiety, and depression in patients. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) emerges as a strategy to mitigate these impacts. This systematic review, following the PRISMA methodology, aimed to assess the effects of AAT on the cognition, anxiety, and depression of hospitalized patients. Utilizing PubMed, Cochrane, and Scielo databases, 17 articles meeting the criteria were selected, demonstrating improvements in depression and cognitive decline for institutionalized elderly individuals, reduced anxiety in hospitalizations, and indications of improvement in anxiety and depression for patients in psychiatric hospitals. The results support the practice of AAT, considering the specific characteristics and needs of hospital environments.
