NUNES, Katiúscia Caminhas  e  CASSINI, Meire Rose de Oliveira Loureiro. PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY AND CARE STRATEGIES FACING THE IMPACTS OF ILLNESS. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2021, vol.19, n.2, pp.65-80.  Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 2175-3547.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15490019.

Oncological illness relates to suffering and death with repercussions on people's lives. Upon an oncological diagnosis, patients, family members, and the health team deal with significant physical, psychological, social, and spiritual impacts. They are often associated with social stigmas, thus impacting how to deal with this moment. Through a literature review, this article aims to elucidate the psychosocial impacts after the diagnosis of cancer. Also, we shed light on the role of the psychologist as part of a multidisciplinary team. Given the context of suffering and the experienced impacts, the psychologist welcomes, performs qualified listening, supports, and helps at all stages. The psychologist helps all those involved in dealing with the illness, respecting individuality and subjectivity. Care strategies enable each one to rescue more authentic ways of being in the world, aiming at improving well-being and quality of life.
