LIMA, Thamires Enderle e CASTRO, Carolina Fernandes de. PERCEPTION OF PHYSICIANS AND NURSES WORKING IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT ABOUT PALLIATIVE CARE. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.1, pp.2-17. Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 2175-3547. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15519138.
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an environment where, culturally, people try to maintain life at any cost, but in addition to intensive and curative care, Palliative Care (PC) must also be present in the therapeutic plan. Objective: to analyze the perception of doctors and nurses working in ICUs regarding PC and identify their difficulties regarding the subject. Method: exploratory qualitative research was conducted through individual semi-structured interviews in a public hospital in Santa Catarina. Eight professionals participated, including two contracted doctors, two resident doctors, two contracted nurses, and two resident nurses. Results: the professionals understand that PC is limited to patients with incurable diseases, therapeutic failure, or imminent death, and it is infrequently practiced in the ICU. The difficulties identified were poor communication between the team and the family, lack of theoretical-technical knowledge, divergent understandings of the concept of PC, and the absence of protocols. Conclusion: The understanding of the doctors and nurses in the study location is outdated and inadequate. These results can be related to the current disease-centered healthcare model and the absence of the topic in professional training.
