PEREIRA, Marina Soares Pagani e SCHNEIDER, Priscila. GRANDPARENTS IN CONTEMPORARY FAMILIES: CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS HEALTH CARE IN A HOSPITAL CONTEXT. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.1, pp.37-57. Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 2175-3547. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15519235.
This study analyzes the role taken by contemporary families’ grandparents on their grandchildren’s health care in a hospital context. Grandparents that help on their grandchildren’s care are important parenting figures for the child and the adolescent. This study’s objective is to characterize the grandparents’ role on their grandchildren’s care in a hospital context. Specific objectives were to verify the grandparents’ reasons for taking this role, to identify their perceptions and feelings relating to their grandchildren’s needs of health and care, and to determine how the health professionals’ intervention happens alongside the grandparents. Methods used were critical literature review and narrative review. Results showed a concordance among the chosen literature on the factors that take grandparents to this role, like being an emotional support for their children and grandchildren, while being required to comprehend their grandchildren’s care and illness situation.
