Abstract
ALMEIDA, Marília Mastrocolla de and SILVA, Rosalina Carvalho da. Understanding the surviving strategies that adolescents use before and after admission to a social-educational institution. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2004, vol.5, n.1, pp.82-102. ISSN 1984-7270.
The present paper focuses the surviving strategies used by adolescents to get money and accessibility to consumer goods. The subjects were 104 adolescents authors of infraction acts from a state socialeducational institution. Data were collected from structured interviews as well as field recordings of the activities carried out during the study. The data were characterized according to types of strategies used, age at the beginning of activity, activity duration, the possible reasons to discontinue them, amount of money earned and allocation of money. When inquired about choice options, several adolescents voiced their wish to develop activities different from the ones they performed prior to admission. However, they faced scarce options of choice and change due to the lack of training programs which would be interesting, efficient and dignifying, in the institution. The results from this paper might contribute to future discussions about public policies related to those adolescents.
