This research aimed to describe the profile of the student who dropped out and the reasons for university evasion and recommend initiatives to support services for college students with the potential to contribute with the permanence in undergraduate studies. The survey included 110 students who had dropped out of a federal university. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Taken together, the results reinforced that dropping out in higher education is a complex phenomenon, crossed by personal determinants and internal and external factors to educational institutions. Interventions of academic and career counseling should be thought of in a contextualized way aiming to contribute with strategies for permanence in higher education.

Keywords : dropout; university students; academic integration; professional guidance.
