The present study aimed to understand the main factors that affect the mental health of master’s and doctoral students at a Brazilian federal public institution. A quantitative survey was carried out with 1582 students at the institution. The results demonstrate that there are significant differences in the levels of depression, anxiety and stress regarding gender differences, PPG grades from CAPES and number of hours in the laboratory. The main factors that triggered depression, anxiety and stress, were working hours longer than 12 hours per day, the program’s CAPES score and having a scholarship. The way graduate studies are structured has generated a cycle of competitiveness and exacerbated productivism, which has a negative impact on the mental health of graduate students.
