Population aging entails epidemiological changes, requiring specific approaches in healthcare processes. This qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study discussed implications and peculiarities related to social support and cognitive capacity in the elderly, considering illness patterns. The research revealed a panorama of normative cognitive declines and vulnerabilities associated with aging, such as a higher incidence of chronic diseases. It emphasizes the importance of distinguishing senile and senescence processes, especially in the context of cognition and discussing issues related to declines in independence and autonomy, considering respect for the choices of elderly patients. Interdisciplinarity is highlighted as a comprehensive strategy, particularly in the context of recovery and healthcare.
