The present study aims to describe the historical path of the creation of services in the municipality of Barbacena, aiming to implement the process of deinstitutionalization of hospitalized patients and the closure of beds and psychiatric hospitals with a focus on the period from 1988 to 2022. This is a qualitative research carried out through the collection of documents and interviews with professionals from the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS). It was found that the implementation of services was possible due to changes in current legislation, the efforts of workers, planning and financing for the implementation of RAPS. It is noteworthy that such implementation was extremely important for deinstitutionalization, but there is still the challenge of carrying out the process, as there are 32 residents living in the Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Barbacena.
