ALMEIDA, Antonio Cavalcante de. THE SUICIDE PHENOMENON IN THE STATE OF SANTA CATARINA: A STUDY OF THE MIDDLE-WEST CATARINIAN REGION FROM THE IGP/ IML CENSUS, SC. Mental [online]. 2024, vol.16, n.30, 00007. Epub Dec 16, 2024. ISSN 1679-4427. https://doi.org/10.5935/1679-4427.v16n30.0007.
The article analyzed the profile of subjects who committed suicide from 2000 to 2013, in the Midwest region of Santa Catarina. The data were obtained from the Legal Medical Institute (IML), Santa Catarina. The microregion analyzed has significant rates of voluntary deaths, which motivated us to study this social phenomenon from the comparative/functionalist perspective of Durkheim’s sociology. In the Durkheimian approach, suicide presents multiple variables depending on the individuals’ social context; so that to study it and describe it as such, it is necessary to look for external factors (in addition to physiological, biological and genetic issues), which objectively affect individuals. The research showed that the municipalities analyzed have high prevalence of suicides and with annually different profiles.
