Abstract
MONTENEGRO, Yorran Hardman Araújo. “DIARY OF A MADMAN” (1834) AND HUMAN SUBJECTIVITIES IN THE NORMAL-PATHOLOGICAL DEBATE. Mental [online]. 2025, vol.17, n.31, 0002. Epub June 13, 2025. ISSN 1679-4427. https://doi.org/10.5935/1679-4427.v17n31.0002.
“Diary of a Madman”, written in the autumn of 1834 by Nicolai V. Gogol (1809-1852), is set in the historical and cultural context analyzed by Michel Foucault (1926-1984) in his work “History of Madness in the Classical Age” (1972), characterizing the opportunity for madness as an agent of exclusion. In Gogol’s text, the process of mental illness of Axenty Ivanovitch Poprishchin is identified, in particular, the suspicion of the development of Schizophrenia. The text by the Russian author proves to be an important tool for the discussion of human subjectivities, especially in the contribution of the normal-pathological debate to the anti-asylum movement, offering itself as a methodological strategy for classroom discussion with students of Psychology and Medicine courses.
