FREITAS, Larissa Rodrigues de  e  EMIDIO, Thassia Souza. “When dating comes to an end”: An exploratory study on the experience of breaking up among university students. Vínculo [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.2, pp.169-180.  Epub 23-Set-2024. ISSN 1806-2490.  https://doi.org/10.32467/issn.1982-1492v19n2a2.

This study aims to understand how young people experience the end of romantic relationships nowadays, as well as the consequences of this event in the youth bonding experiences. This qualitative research relied on semi-structured interviews as a method for data collection, which was analyzed through an articulation of the discussions and studies about romantic relationships in contemporaneity with theories from Psychoanalysis. Six college students aged between 18 and 21 were interviewed, who had already gone through the experience of breaking up. Through this study, we observed that dating is experienced by young people as an exclusive form of love bond, involving mutual commitment and care, which offers a sense of security, refuge and protection in the face of adversities experienced in their everyday relationships. A breakup, on the other hand, may happen due to difficulties in sharing with the other or tolerating frustrations, and leads them to a grieving process that exposes them to pain, helplessness and loneliness, requiring effort to elaborate and reconfigure the cathexis, during which the help and support of one’s friendships and familiar connections have shown to be of great importance.

Palavras-chave : Dating; grief; bond.
