Abstract

COLOME, Carolina Schmitt et al. Repercussions of the (un)familiarity of the Autism Spectrum Disorder: mothers’ journey. Vínculo [online]. 2025, vol.22, e220014.  Epub Sep 05, 2025. ISSN 1806-2490.  https://doi.org/10.32467/issn.1982-1492v22na14.

This study investigated the path of mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) following the diagnosis. A qualitative study was conducted, in which 12 mothers of children with ASD participated. Data was collected through reflective interviews and analyzed using Grounded Theory. Receiving the diagnosis was marked by shock and acceptance difficulties, a process intensified by the lack of knowledge of mothers, other family members and people in the maternal social life about the disorder. However, while the mothers were able to seek knowledge about ASD and re-signify experiences in relation to the diagnosis, the others did not follow the same path. The importance of disseminating knowledge about ASD to society is highlighted.
