Abstract

SILVA, Martha Dionísio Campos  and  RABELO, Dóris Firmino. Elderly caregivers: Mental health and time dedicated to older adults’ caregiving. Vínculo [online]. 2025, vol.22, e220010.  Epub Sep 15, 2025. ISSN 1806-2490.  https://doi.org/10.32467/issn.1982-1492v22na10.

The objective was to verify, in elderly women, the associations between the daily journey in the care of elderly people, Common Mental Disorders, and sociodemographic variables. It was a web-based study, in which 143 elderly women answered a questionnaire with: Sociodemographic information; Daily time spent caring for the elderly; Self-Reporting Questionnaire-SRQ-20. Bivariate and multivariate analyses (p≤0.05) were performed. The care responsibility fell on the elderly caregiver in a mainly rural context and assistance to elderly spouses and parents. A longer journey of daily hours dedicated to care was represented by elderly women in conditions of financial constraint and social reproduction activities, older age, and with signs that indicated overload and greater physical and emotional exhaustion.
