This article aims to report the experience of two students from an undergraduate psychology course at a university in the interior of Minas Gerais, in a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS). The main objective was to foster critical thinking about mental health practices throughout history, from the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform to its current expressions. In this way, the students were able to observe the possibilities and difficulties of care in a mental health institution, and based on their experience, reflexively approach two main themes: the construction of the singular therapeutic project (PTS) and the functionality of therapeutic workshops and assemblies. It was possible to conclude that CAPS contributes to the existence of practices that promote the reorganization of users’ social ties, although it still maintains remnants of asylum practices.
