SILVA, Rafaella Villela e. I see flowers in you: Adelina Gomes and the humanized treatment of madness through art. IGT rede [online]. 2024, vol.21, n.40, pp.126-150. Epub 12-Mayo-2025. ISSN 1807-2526. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15150895.
The concept of madness has undergone changes according to the time and historical context, but individuals considered mad have continued to be mistreated and tortured over the years. Nise da Silveira, a Brazilian psychiatrist, had a significant influence on the anti-asylum movement and the humanized treatment of these socially marginalized individuals, as exemplified by the case of Adelina Gomes, one of her “clients”. Adelina Gomes’s story perfectly illustrates how the humanized treatment offered by a psychology professional can be effective. Therefore, the central objective of this work is to demonstrate a possible therapeutic approach through art for those considered mad. In this context, Adelina’s treatment prompts us to reconsider the relationship between art and madness, paving the way for a discussion about the use of art as a means of redefining what has been and what will be from the present moment. This is a documentary research, a qualitative research technique that analyzes the discourse among subjects and their relationship of significance, according to different cultural, ideological, and sociological contexts. As a conclusion, it is possible to understand that fostering an individual’s ability to pursue personal growth, authenticity, and self-regulation is achievable through the encouragement of creativity within an environment of freedom, where respect is valued and human uniqueness is taken into account..
