American clinical psychology has been characterized by a tradition that stresses the value of a strong scientific grounding for the field and the development of clinical practices with proven efficacy. Here we present some of the clinical scientist movement's theses as the high point of this tradition. Among its main proposals is the defense of clinical psychology as an applied science and the integration between basic science and clinical practice. In order to establish scientifically grounded psychotherapies, the clinical scientist movement also maintains that psychotherapies should be evaluated with respect to its efficacy by randomized clinical trials. Finally, we indicate some limitations of the psychotherapy model that arises from these theses.
