Suicide is considered a public health problem and Brazil is in eighth place in the ranking of countries with the highest suicide rates. A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy has been intensely indicated for the treatment of several psychological disorders and it is also necessary to evaluate its effectiveness to prevent suicide. This research allows to identify, gather and analyze how CBT contributions to suicide prevention in patients with depression, investigating the main strategies and techniques and verifying the effectiveness of this therapy. It is a narrative review in which five articles were selected and analyzed. Several strategies and techniques were presented, among them: psychoeducation, improvement of the social support network, cognitive conception, cognitive restructuring, training of social skills, training of problem solving skills, establishment of security plans and impulse control. The effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for preventing suicide has also been proven. It was evident that there are few studies in Portuguese that are not Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Suicide Prevention. Therefore, this narrative review should serve as an alert to the need for more research in this area.
