Burnout and Early Maladaptive Schemas in students of psychology courses from Porto Alegre and metropolitan area. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.1, pp.30-38. OBJECTIVES: The present study intended to verify possible significant differences in the Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs) between a group composed of participants with Burnout Syndrome in Students (BSS) and another without BSS. In addition, the objective was to identify the predominant EMSs in the sample. METHODS: The sample consisted of 205 psychology undergraduate students. The instruments used were: sociodemographic questionnaire, Young Scheme Questionnaire - Short Form (YSQ-S3) and Burnout Syndrome Assessment Scale in University Students. RESULTS: Although the EMSs that showed the highest averages in the total sample were Self- sacrifice, Unrelenting standards/hypercriticalness and Approvalseeking/ recognition-seeking, the EMSs most strongly related to the presence of BSS, when considering the differences between groups, were Insufficient self- control/self-discipline, Social isolation/alienation, Dependency/incompetency, Failure, Negativism/pessimism and Unrelenting standards/hypercriticalness. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that students with these EMSs experience more intensively some typical stressors of graduation, such as the excessive load of activities, the need to assume responsibilities and the social pressure for high academic performance, in addition to specific demands of the psychology course, such as the emotional demand during the internships, leading them to physical and mental exhaustion.
