Abstract
MACENA, Matheus and FARO, André. The mediating role of self-efficacy and self-esteem in anxiety: a study with university students. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.2, pp.195-201. Epub Aug 26, 2024. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230023.
This study investigated the role of self-efficacy and self-esteem as mediators in their relationship with anxiety. The sample was composed of 189 university students who answered the General Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale. The mediation analysis was conducted using JASP software. Two analysis models were generated, and correlation tests and linear regression models were verified to confirm the necessary assumptions for mediation analysis. The predictive ability of the constructs on anxiety and between each other was identified, allowing for a mediation test to be performed. Two models were analyzed, one for each construct as a predictor and mediator variable. In the first model, self-efficacy did not show an effect as a mediator in the relationship with anxiety, while self-esteem mediated the relationship in the second model. The mediation model explained 35.9% of the variance in anxious symptoms and showed a suppressive effect of self-esteem on self-efficacy. It is suggested that further studies deepen the analysis of the role of selfesteem in anxiety symptoms.
