MAUS, Débora Wegner e JAGER, Márcia Elisa. Academic skills improvement group: intervention report with university students in the health science area. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.2, pp.272-279. Epub 26-Ago-2024. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230028.
Academic life demands new cognitive, social and behavioral skills from students that make the university environment an important development context. This article reports the experience of a group intervention carried out with undergraduate students enrolled in courses in the subject of health science of a university located in the central region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. During the group intervention, there were seven weekly meetings each lasting 1 hour. Six students with difficulties related to time management and study routine participated in the group. The specific topics were defined according to the students demands at each meeting and the interventions were designed based on cognitive behavioral techniques. The results of the interventions were evaluated through a questionnaire to assess the perception and individual satisfaction completed by the participants at the end of the last meeting. We found that the students benefitted from targeted cognitive behavioral techniques. We recommend that holding working groups to identify issues and define appropriate cognitive behavioral techniques can be important to improve students academic skills related to time management and study routines when they reach higher education and are faced with issues related to the beginning of their professional life.
