Abstract

DUTRA, Jodeli Paim; PUREZA, Juliana da Rosa  and  STOCK, Tatiana Otto. The relationships between character strengths and virtues and adaptive initial schemes in brazilian adults. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2024, vol.20, e20240440.  Epub Jan 10, 2025. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20240440.

Visibility regarding the positive aspects of human beings, such as clinical interventions aimed at healthy functioning, have increased exponentially in recent years. This research aims to identify correlations between virtues and character strengths, from positive psychology, and the early adaptive schemas, from schema therapy. A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional design was adopted, and the research was carried out online. The sample was selected due convenience and was composed of 129 Brazilian participants aged between 18 and 60 years old. The instruments applied were the VIA character test for adults and the adaptive schemes questionnaire, available in online format through the google forms platform. Non-parametric spearman correlation analyzes were performed. As a result, positive and significant correlations with varying strengths between weak and moderate were identified between all early adaptive schemas and all virtues, with the highest strength being the correlations between the courage virtue and the autonomous (0.645) and success (0.606) adaptive schemas. It was concluded that interaction between positive psychology and schema therapy is promising for clinical psychology and presents potential in practical and theoretical terms.
