MUHLEN, Mara Cristiane von; MUHLEN, José Augusto von; MUHLEN, Natali Meneguzzi da Silva von  y  CAMARA, Sheila Gonçalves. Prevalence and associated factors of non-suicidal self-injury among school adolescents in a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2024, vol.20, e20240487.  Epub 10-Ene-2025. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20240487.

Non-suicidal self-injury is considered a public health problem. This cross-sectional, school-based study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with this behavior among 878 adolescents, aged between 10 and 17 years, who were students of the Municipal Public School Network in a city located in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The data collection included the following questionnaires: Sociodemographic Survey, Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Scale, Brazilian Coping Scale for Adolescents, Trait Meta-Mood Scale, Communication with Reference Persons, Interpersonal Stress Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Interpersonal Social Skills Scale, General Health Questionnaire - 12 items, and Positive and Negative Affect Scale. A high prevalence (53.9%; n=473) was evidenced, and the results of the hierarchical model showed a statistically significant association between non-suicidal self-injury and age (being between 13 and 17 years old) (p=0.003), economic class A and B (p=0.014), absence of religious practice (p=0.001), difficulty in communicating with reference people (p<0.001), presence of common mental disorders (p<0.001), greater experience of negative affect (p=0.002), greater interpersonal stress (p=0.037), and inadequate emotional clarity (p<0.004) and repair (p0.001). Prevention and intervention for non-suicidal self-harm are absolutely necessary among adolescents.
