Introduction:
Psychiatric hospitalization can be a strong emotional stressor for patients in crisis.
Objective:
to evaluate the impact of the intervention protocol of cognitive-behavioral in patients admitted to a psychiatric emergency unit.
Method:
quasi-experimental study; 10 patients took part; instruments applied: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (QSG); a protocol based on the cognitive-behavioral model was used for the intervention.
Results:
The sample was 70% (n=7) female (M = 39 years ± 14.44 years), 60% (n=6) of the participants had a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. There was a statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms (15.5 ± 3.37 pre and 6.5 ± 5.13 post, p= 0.001) and depression symptoms (11 ± 4.55 pre and 6.5 ± 2.51 post, p=0.008). All the participants scored above the cut-off score for the SRQ-20, showing psychological distress in each of the factors, and in the assessment of general health status (GHQ) the scores were above the expected median in all the factors, denoting psychiatric difficulties.
Conclusion:
The data indicate that the cognitive-behavioral intervention protocol reduces anxiety and has shown promising application in a hospital setting in psychiatric emergency services.
