Abstract
GALARREGUI, Marina Soledad and KEEGAN, Eduardo Gustavo. Perfectionism and procrastination in argentine university students. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2024, vol.20, e20240469. Epub Dec 06, 2024. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20240469.
Perfectionism is characterized by the establishment of high standards for performance, together with an excessively critical self-evaluation, and a growing concern about making mistakes. Procrastination is a failure in self-regulation, where a planned course of action is voluntarily delayed despite negative consequences. Since the academic environment is a context that promotes the pursuit of excellence, it is conducive to the expression of perfectionism and the study of its correlates. The goal of the present study was to analyze the relationship between perfectionism and procrastination in Argentine university students. It was a non-experimental, crosssectional study of descriptive, correlational, and group difference scope. A total of 395 students participated, 292 females and 103 males; 66.1% (n=261) scored as non-perfectionists (NP), 19% (n=75) as maladaptive perfectionists (MP), and 14.9% (n=59) as adaptive perfectionists (AP). We found that 95.7% of students (n=378) procrastinated. Differential associations were found between the positive and negative dimensions of perfectionism with procrastination. Comparatively, AP reported lower levels of procrastination than MP and NP, [F(2)=10.26, p<.001]. These findings are consistent with a multidimensional conception of perfectionism.
