SANTOS, Camilla Gonçalves Brito et al. Evidence of Validity of On-line Versions of the Working Alliance Inventory for Therapists and Clients in the Evaluation of the Therapeutic Alliance. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2024, vol.20, e20240500.  Epub 10-Jan-2025. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20240500.

Although several studies indicate the therapeutic alliance (TA) as an important predictor of results in psychotherapy, little is known about its role in the results of on-line psychotherapy, and good available measures are essential. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Working Alliance Inventory therapist (WAI-T) and client (WAI-C) versions. Data were taken from an umbrella project that conducts a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy protocol of 12 on-line, individual sessions for people with Alcohol Use Disorder. The WAI-T and WAI-C were answered in the 4th, 8th, and 12th sessions using an on-line form. The WAI-T and WAI-C had increased general scores and subscales throughout the psychotherapeutic process. The instruments showed high internal consistency (WAI-T=0.94 and WAI-C=0.93). The WAI-T Exploratory Factor Analysis identified three factors with explanatory power of 49.3% of the total variance. In the WAI-C, four factors were identified with an explanatory power of 55.7%. On both instruments, strong correlations were observed between the total score and its subscales. The psychometric properties of the instruments were similar to those of studies conducted in face-to-face therapy and were suitable for the on-line modality, enabling the assessment of the therapeutic alliance in on-line interventions for clinical and research practice..
