There are few options for psychotherapeutic interventions for older individuals in Brazil, and well as a deficit in the training of psychologists to deal with the specific demands of old age. It is important that psychological interventions and the training of psychologists are based on a theoretical-practical foundation that considers the key identities of the therapist-client dyad. This professional report describes the management and supervision procedures related to the training of a young therapist for cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat an older individual diagnosed with depression. The objectives were to identify and address the therapists aversive feelings and thoughts regarding the case, identify and address generational, values, and identity differences within the dyad, identify and restructure the therapists ageist beliefs, and develop empathy from the therapist towards the client. By understanding the identity differences within the dyad, engaging with the clients case conceptualization, identifying patterns of feelings and beliefs in sessions, and receiving support and validation in supervision, the therapist felt confident in conducting the therapy. Efforts should be made to ensure that the training of therapists for older people is based on theoretical and methodological frameworks consistent with the needs and characteristics of the Brazilian older population.
