GOMES, Ana Paula Gualter Romero; PAVELTCHUK, Fernanda de Oliveira e CARVALHO, Marcele Regine. Practical guidelines for assisting deaf people in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: a scoping review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2025, vol.21, e20250548. Epub 09-Jan-2026. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20250548.
Even today, clinical psychology can be harmful when working with deaf clients, such as in CBT interventions with social minorities that focus only on the individual level of oppression. This scoping review aims to investigate publications that present practical guidelines for psychotherapy in the CBT approach, also including guidelines from affirmative therapies, in the treatment of the deaf or hard-of-hearing population. The scoping review was conducted using the model proposed by the PRISMA checklist. Sixteen articles were selected, 6 related to CBT and deafness and 10 related to affirmative therapies and culturally based practices for this population. Most studies focus on treatment adaptation, highlighting the importance of the therapist knowing the deaf culture, being fluent in sign language, adapting written materials and using visual and practical resources. The stigma faced by social minorities must be understood as a social process, associated with structures of power and domination, which results in invisibility and difficulty in accessing health care. The difficulty in accessing health care, including adequate psychological treatments, exemplifies the structural violence suffered by deaf people. In this way, the importance of being a therapist with culturally sensitive practices is highlighted.
