Abstract

SOUZA, Maria Julia Carreiro Vieira de; PEREIRA, Luisa Braga  and  DONATO-OLIVA, Angela. Self-compassion and eating behaviour of overweight and obese people: A Scoping Review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2025, vol.21, e20250539.  Epub Jan 09, 2026. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20250539.

Recent research suggests that self-compassion can promote a healthier relationship with food. However, its relationship with disordered eating behaviours in the population with overweight and obesity is still unclear. The aim of this scoping review was to explore the current state of the literature on the relationship between selfcompassion and the eating behaviour of people living with overweight and obesity. This study was carried out following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodological guidance for scoping reviews. A search was conducted in four databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, considering studies that reported some assessment of self-compassion or interventions with some application of elements of self-compassion. Of the 938 records examined, 14 studies were included. The evidence found indicates that self-compassion may be associated with a lower presence of disordered eating behaviours, as well as that self-compassion training appears to have possible beneficial effects on the eating behaviours of people living with overweight and obesity, especially with regard to emotional eating. This scoping review highlights the variety of interventions and the need for more methodologically robust research.
