BICALHO, RUTE NOGUEIRA DE MORAIS; SILVA, GEANE DE JESUS y OLIVEIRA, MARIA CLÁUDIA SANTOS LOPES DE. SOCIALIZATION PROCESSES AND CONSTITUTION THE SELF: REFLECTIONS ON HOMESCHOOLING. Arq. bras. psicol. Nowadays, criticism of the school institution has grown, and families now claim greater control over their children’s education, strengthening the homeschooling movement. In counterpoint, the State reiterates the obligation of formal education as a fulfillment of a constitutional right. Facing the debate, this paper is a theoretical essay that reflects on socialization processes, in the light of Symbolic Interactionism. It reflects on the role of school education in social formation, in the face of the movement of homeschooling and its impact on the integral development of the self of students. It is worth asking: to what extent can the reduction of opportunities for negotiation with the social other empty the space of action and constitution of students? The answer to the question is sought in dialogue with ideas elaborated by George Herbert Mead, which allow us to understand the school as the Generalized Other able to offer references for the socialization and development of children and adolescents.
