Abstract

COSTA, ANA LUDMILA FREIRE  and  OLIVEIRA, ISABEL FERNANDES DE. PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL POLICIES: A MARXIST APPROACH. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.74, e020.  Epub Sep 09, 2024. ISSN 1809-5267.  https://doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.arbp-2022v74.19679.

Psychology practice in social policies goes back to the last decades of the twentieth century and promises itself as an important professional field. It means that psychologists are working with larger contingents of poor people, but it also reveals a mismatch between the psychologists’ practices performed and demands presented by people. To overcome this scenario, this paper aims to discuss the need for a broad and grounded understanding of the macrostructural determinations that condition social policies for an effective work of Psychology in this field. Therefore, Marx’s Social Theory and the Marxist approach are used to analyze the nature of social policies, situated in the Capitalist Mode of Production, its current appearance during economic crisis and the role of Psychology in the current conjuncture of social rights regression, and state deregulation.

Keywords : Marxism; Critic psychology; Social policies; Social question.
