Absenteeism and well-being at work (i.e. the burnout syndrome and work engagement) are two distinct categories directly associated with nursing professionals and health organizations worldwide. The article aims to analyze the relationship between well-being at work and absenteeism among nursing professionals working in a hospital environment. This research applied a quantitative and cross-sectional approach. It included a total of 201 nursing professionals working in three hospitals in the city of Passo Fundo (RS), Brazil, whose work status was either absent or not absent. Well-being at work was measured by a questionnaire adapted from the Maslach Burnout Inventory. It analyzed two major dimensions associated with the burnout syndrome (cynicism and exhaustion). In addition, work commitment was measured by the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. The results indicated a high level of engagement and low burnout associated with this sample. There were no significant differences between the two groups of absent and not absent nursing professionals.
