Abstract

SOARES, ZELMA FREITAS  and  ALVARENGA, PATRÍCIA. SHORT INTERVENTION ON MOTHERS RESPOSIVENESS TO HOSPITALIZED NEWBORNS. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.74, e023.  Epub Sep 09, 2024. ISSN 1809-5267.  https://doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.arbp-2022v74.19242.

This study adapted a short intervention on the maternal responsiveness and evaluated the effects in mothers of newborns who were hospitalized to treat congenital syphilis. 20 mother-infant dyads recruited from a public hospital participated. They were distributed among intervention and comparison groups. In the pre-intervention evaluation, sociodemographic and clinical information was collected, and maternal mental health was assessed with SRQ-20. The dyads of the intervention group participated in the “Affection Doses Program”, implemented in a reserved room in the hospital throughout six meetings. In the post-intervention assessment, maternal responsiveness was evaluated based on an observation of dyad’s free interaction. Results indicated that mothers in the intervention group interpreted their newborn’s behaviors more often than mothers in the comparison group, who in turn, caressed and rocked their babies more often. The potential of the program for applications in the hospital context and the need to improve it are discussed.
